According to Microsoft, the objective of a spam filter is to evaluate an e-message and set the spam confidence level (SCL) value on the e-message. Afterwards, the email server can figure out whether to allow an e-message through to a user's inbox or to toss it in the junk mail folder. While spam filtering is an important art, it is yet flawless. Therefore, users should be cautious and check the junk mail folder. A spam filter's most basic prime purpose is to filter out trash email automatically. Since it is time-consuming and tedious to manually sort through an inbox comprising both spam and valid mail, email services use an automated tool to do the job instead. Deploying these filtering programs, busy email users don't have to handle irritating sales offers, scams and potentially dangerous malware. There are several kinds of spam filters deployed on the Web now. The most popular are used by email servers for individual mailboxes, and may be customized to fulfill the end user's requirements. Another kind of spam filter is used on sites where there is user communication, such as a blog or community forum. Spam filters time-saving, but they can at times cause problems. Commonly, perfectly valid mail is tossed into the spam box, thereby increasing the chance of lost correspondence. Sometimes, spam filters can totally miss junk mail. Spammers have developed software to bypass many kinds of filters by deploying diverse deceptive tactics. Spam filters have made the Internet a cleaner place, but they have to be improved. Since programming and Web ISPs become savvier to the detrimental effects of spam, filtering tools will certainly be improved in scope and specificity. Among complaints from online marketing groups and consumers, the spam filter industry now must produce a product that doesn't weed out wanted sales e-messages or valid mail. As blogs and other interaction media grow in scope, spam filters must improve to catch up with spammers who constantly seek new means to sell product and benefit from bringing on problems for other users.
